Man bags seven months for stealing father’s TV set
An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court in Karu on Friday sentenced one Henry Emeakayi to seven months imprisonment for stealing a plasma television set belonging to his father.
The presiding judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, sentenced Emeakayi after he pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal trespass, house breaking and theft, brought against him by the police.
Ishaq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N11,000 fine and N45,000 as compensation to his father for the theft of the television set.
The ruling did not go down well with the convict's elder brother, Ken Emeakayi, who was the complainant and prosecution witness in the case.
Ken questioned the rationale for the option of fine, arguing that the convict should be put behind bars for rehabilitation.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Sgt. Stephen Eimoga, told the court that Ken had reported the case at the Karu Police Station on June 16.
Eimoga said the accused broke into their family house at Karu, Abuja, when no one was at home and stole the television set valued at N45,000.
He said the accused sold the TV at a give-away price, adding that efforts by the police to recover the set were abortive as he refused to cooperate with investigators.
The prosecutor said the convict gave a voluntary statement at the station in which he confessed to the crime.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 342, 346 and 286 of the Penal Code.
