The government of Lagos State says its main goal in the health sector is to "attain excellence in health service delivery by applying best practices at all levels of care." However, investigation conducted by the PremiumTimes has revealed a truly horrible state of affairs at the Ikorodu General Hospital. The bodies kept carelessly in the mortuaries are decomposing, and morticians wash the deceased in the open with water fetched in battered old plastic buckets.
When the investigators visited the hospital's mortuary, a great number of bodies, carelessly kept in an unrefrigerated shipping container, were already decomposing – fluid from the bodies kept in the upper cabinets was dripping freely on the bodies below. One bereaved husband, who had to remove the body of his wife due to the way it was handled, said the body was so badly decomposed that its head was almost severed from its body.
Filth and smell of decaying bodies that pervades the area is a perfect environment for flies. Visitors also voice serious health concerns regarding workers, patients and other inhabitants of the area, and the environment in and around the hospital. The hospital's canteen and catering services department is just few metres from the makeshift mortuary.
