NIMET fears flooding in Jos, Gombe, others...

The Director-General, Nigerian Meterological Agency, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, has raised the alarm that four cities in the northern part of the country could be flooded if the rain pattern witnessed in the states continued for more days.
Anuforom, who announced this at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, also said the agency had acquired a higher capacity for more accurate weather prediction.
The NIMET boss said Bauchi, Gombe, Jos, Kaduna axis were already saturated and any heavy rain as experienced in the past few days could result in flooding in the affected areas.
Anuforom also disclosed that NIMET had obtained International Standards Organisation's certification for provision of meteorological services to the aviation sector at the four major airports in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt.
According to Anuforom, with the new prediction capacity known as Numerical Weather Prediction, weather forecasts can be made three to 10 days ahead of time.
The new technique is also capable of giving the variable weather information within a particular city as there could be variations in weather conditions within the city.
He said, "Numerical Weather Prediction is the modern way of making weather forecasts and is being used by specilised weather forecasting centres all over the world.
"It is an objective way of weather forecasting with fewer personnel involved. It also provides climate prediction (climate information) over a long period of time.
"The NWP activities revolutionise the mode of doing things by making the weather forecasting process much faster and covering more geographical area."
