Your daughters won’t be abused in sports, Lasisi tells parents

Former Nigeria table tennis player, Kasali Lasisi has called on parents to allow their female children to participate more in sports and dismiss the fear that they could be abused.
Lasisi made the appeal in an interview at the Lagos International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Classics at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Lasisi, who runs a table tennis academy in Ilorin, said that many parents and guardians did not allow their girls to participate in sports due to the fear.
"I know that, with the girl-child abuse now rampant, parents are scared of allowing their female children to be coached by males.
"Coaches now undergo different courses to enlighten us on how to treat girls we are coaching. "We have been taught to behave like a coach, father and mother; if you cannot sleep with your child, it will be difficult for you to do such to a girl under your tutelage," he said.
The ex-international urged upcoming sportsmen and women to take education serious, saying that the future would be bright for athletes who combined sports with education.
"A lot of parents have the mindset that sports will not allow their children to be focused. There are many former players now into law and medicine," he said.
