Welbeck Will Score 20 Goals This Season – Moyes

After talks with his manager over improving his positional awareness, the striker hit an opening day double in an impressive 4-1 win over Swansea

Manchester United manager David Moyes says Danny Welbeck can develop into a 20-goal-a-season striker.

The 22-year-old notched just two goals for the club in all competitions last season but has already equalled that tally with a double away to Swansea.

Moyes admitted he has attempted to improve the England international's prowess in front of goal by working on his positioning, and now wants to help him become a leading striker in the league.

"During the summer tour, I spoke to him a lot, urging him to get in more goalscoring positions. We kept saying to him to get in there – actually he missed a few on the tour," he told reporters.

"But when he scored his second at Swansea last week when he flicked the ball over the keeper's head, I said to him it was the sort of finish of someone with confidence who'd scored 20 goals in the Premier League.

"Can he be a 20-goals-a-season striker? We're going to try and encourage him to be that and do everything we can to do so."

The former Everton manager believes this renewed confidence will serve Welbeck well as the club embark on their title defence.

"I think sometimes you need a run and a bit of confidence with getting the goals," he told reporters when asked about the academy graduate.

"Sometimes you need to get into the right areas and maybe in the past, Danny has not wanted to get right in to get his goals.

"That's why his first one at Swansea was pleasing because he was in for a ball that was played right across the six-yard box and he got himself a tap-in."
